If solitude
is what you're looking for, this is for you!
In the old days, Cowboys used "line camps" or
"sign camps" where they were stationed to
"ride line" or "ride sign," which meant to turn back cattle
straying from the home range, follow the tracks of those which they missed,
watch for rustlers, tail-up cattle during storms and pull them from bog-holes.
The
likes of Ben Lily and Geronimo roamed the area and this is your chance to experience a horseback riding
adventure! Rastus Cabin, on the very edge of the Gila
National Forest/Gila Wilderness provides an exciting opportunity to
recreate the
life of a
real cowboy. Nearly 100 years ago, homesteader Rastus Perry
settled on this
remote piece of land tucked against the great Gila Wilderness.. Rastus made his living turning corn into
"shine". Once every month his team and wagon would haul
his home brew into the town of
Silver City, nearly 40 miles away. More recently, ranchers in the area used
Rastus' cabin to work their cows, look for strays and get out of unexpected
weather.
Tighten up yer cinch! This adventure ain't fer the feint-hearted or weak-kneed. There's no phone or fax... just
you, yer horse, endless vistas and brilliant stars at night. This country is
mind-numbing in it's beauty. Ride out in the morning
and head to the Cabin 10 miles from Headquarters. Once there, enjoy a
picnic, camp-style lunch to fill yer
belly - just like the cowboys did 100 years ago. Can you handle the
quiet?? You'll get back in touch with nature's healing powers,
guaranteed! Alone with the spirits of the past, this is the starting point for a journey back in
time...a journey your heart and mind will not soon forget!
